In Germany Nicholls began a series of collaborations with artists and curators that continue to this day, including exhibitions, discussions and international exchanges. In addition to her studio practice she is currently co curating an international residency and exhibition for ArToll Germany November 2014.

Nicholls' work takes as its point of departure issues of history, memory and metaphor, involving detailed research into architectural/archeological sites, their traces and remains, and the complicated methods of their recording and analysis. Her visual practice, although centred around painting, employs a broad range of mediums and materials, including photography, video, sound, fabric and installation. Most recently, Nicholls has used techniques of using watercolour on large sheets of paper. This followed a residency at Winsor and Newton where she was working alongside scientistís developing paint. The works are painted on the floor horizontally with the artist both over-seeing the entirety but also, at the same time closely scrutinising the process. Each droplet, mineral grain and movement is studied.

As a teacher Nicholls has been employed for over twenty years in both further and higher education, including fine art BA and MA degree teaching and curriculum development. She has also been concerned with the setting up and running of artist's mentoring schemes. Subsequent to her studies at Goldsmiths College Nicholls received an MA and Doctorate in Fine Art from the University of East London.

Barbara Nicholls has been the recipient of a number of bursaries and awards, including grants from Arts Council England and the British Council. Her works are in many private and corporate collections in Britain and abroad.
